Heat Advisory: Tools to stay safe

Heat20Advisory_1502473635773_3905611_ver1.0_640_360

It does not seem like things are going to cool down anytime soon as we go through another little heat wave.

Do you know the symptoms of heat exhaustion or even worse...heat stroke?! This is different from a regular stroke but heat stroke is still very serious.

  • Tip #1!! HYDRATE!! Water is best.  You have something to do tomorrow? You must hydrate today!  You have to Pre-Hydrate because you can’t Re-Hydrate.  Typically you will sweat out more than you can drink in when you need it. Pre-Hydrate and keep drinking throughout the day.

If you’ve stopped sweating outside in this heat you have made it to heat stroke.

  • Tip #2!! Put it off or get it done early.  Try to get things done when it’s cooler.  If you can’t then take frequent breaks!  A/C is a wonderful thing.

  • Tip #3.  Cool-Towel.  This is one of the tools our firefighters use to cool off.  A small towel soaked in cool water that you wring out and wrap around the back of your neck to help cool you off while you’re outside.

  • Tip #4.  Check your pee.  I know...Weird to say BUT what if you’re not making urine?  You’re VERY dehydrated and at risk for Heat Stroke.  Urine is dark yellow? Still Dehydrated.  Light yellow to clear? In okay shape but keep drinking water!

  • Tip #5.  Check on your neighbors, especially those who are more susceptible like those with other health conditions, disabilities, or elderly.  A simple phone call or text may be appreciated.
