Celebrating Halloween in Colonial Heights

Celebrating Halloween in Colonial Heights

While Halloween typically represents a time of fun and excitement for children and adults alike, the current Halloween season will be different than prior years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In general, the more closely people interact with each other and the longer that interaction lasts, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. Halloween trick-or-treating is not a City event, and the City is not canceling general trick-or-treating activities.  However, some people may choose not to participate in certain Halloween activities, such as trick-or-treating, during the pandemic. For those considering traditional house to house trick-or-treating, the Virginia Department of Health considers this a highest risk activity (please see the attached VDH Halloween Events guidance document for more information).

City Sponsored Halloween Events

However, due to the pandemic and current restrictions involving events, this year’s Halloween in the Park event has been cancelled. This event typically draws thousands of people and the safety of our staff, vendors, and our patrons is first and foremost. With your support, we fully anticipate coming back better than ever in 2021.

While we are sad about not being able to hold our annual Halloween in the Park event, the City’s Recreation & Parks Department has partnered with the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses to offer a Halloween in the Heights: A Drive Thru Experience event on Halloween Night. Businesses around the City will be setting up in front of their offices on Halloween Night to hand out candy to children between the hours of 6:00pm-8:00pm. We hope that children, and adults, will still don their Halloween costumes and visit our business partners for this drive-through event. While not required, pre-registration for this event is appreciated so businesses can prepare to provide candy at their locations. Online registration is available here or by calling the Recreation & Parks Department at (804)520-9390. A listing of participating businesses will be posted on the City’s website the week of October 12th.

Please read the attached Halloween Events information from the Virginia Department of Health to help make the best decision for your family about choosing activities to participate in this year.
