Community Service & Teen Employment Opportunities

The Colonial Heights Recreation Department offers two types of community service opportunities to interested individuals and/or groups. Both opportunities listed below engage individuals and groups in our community in a meaningful way by providing volunteer support to our programs, events and facilities. We also have opportunities for teens to gain valuable work experience in our Summer and Teen Center programs.

Volunteer-Oriented Community Service

This community service opportunity is for individuals wishing to volunteer their time for various activities, events and park or facility projects offered by the Recreation and Parks Department. Volunteers are used annually for the Easter Egg Hunt, Easter Egg Night Hunt, Sunshine 5k, Fort Clifton Festival, Back to School Festival, Youth Sports, Halloween in the Park, Parents Night Out, Lunch with Santa and Santa's Calling to name a few. Volunteers are also utilized each year to complete different park projects around the City. Interested individuals or groups can join the Recreation and Parks Department’s e-mail list to sign up. Individuals will be notified via e-mail when volunteers are needed for a specific event or project. Court-Ordered Community Service

This community service opportunity is for individuals who are over the age of 18 and they are typically scheduled outdoors in various climate conditions. These individuals typically begin work at 7:00am and must wear long pants, closed toe shoes, and an appropriate top.

Youth Employment Programs

The Colonial Heights Recreation Department offers the following training program to interested teens.

Counselor-in-Training Program (C.I.T.)

The C.I.T. program is a great opportunity for teens ages 14-15 to receive in-depth training in supervision and teaching techniques. C.I.T.’s will learn about responsibility, teamwork, safety, customer service, crafts, games, financial planning, and job readiness skills. All individuals who wish to become a C.I.T. must attend a 7 week training program which includes homework assignments and interactive participation. At the of the 7 weeks, several teens will be selected to receive additional training, volunteer hours, and a stipend for volunteer work during the Summer Playground Program. More information on this program is released each March.
